Chapter 20

Making Waves

The next morning, Meg and I rode up the mountain in a gondola filled with so much sunlight, I could almost believe that everything was all right. Almost.

Meg used our commute to catch up on bookshop business. She did the majority of book buying for the Chalet. Book buying was part mathematics. Meg considered price, sales data, shelf space, and “window titles” that would draw customers inside. She read up on bookish buzz and followed influential reading clubs like Morgan’s. Another part of the decision—a big part—involved art, instinct, and a passion for books.

While Meg worked her magic, I watched the aspens glide by and stewed on problems.

I warmed up with the smallest. I owed Agatha an apology. Once again, I’d lied when I told her I’d return home last night. Gram’s cozy guest room had snared me. Agatha had thus missed out on her bedtime snack and the joy of stealing my pillow. Correction: She’d missed out on strong-pawing my head off said pillow. She’d likely still slept there.

This problem was easily solved. I’d serve up gushy praise of Agatha’s beauty, and her favorite tuna treats.

Much trickier—although, I supposed, still minor in the realm of troubles—was crafting a reply to Syd.

Reluctantly, I slid my phone from a pocket and brought up his texts. Last night, he’d sent a single word in exuberant all-caps.

THANKS!!!
